Oh man, could not agree more with the romantic interest issue of “action girls”. Fine, you can use the action girl stereotype as a base (because that’s what is should be if you use it, just the very basic start to a character that you actually evolve at some point!) but to then have them reduced to utter weakness because some dude comes along and melts her icy heart is unbelievably insulting to everything you just set up.
On the other hand though, yes women are often objectified in action films, but it’s not as though men aren’t. None of them are really your average guy on the street. My view has always been that the problem isn’t based in gender, it’s just general bad, superficial writing on the whole. If you find a show/comic etc with a terrible main character, the rest of the story and writing will be equally as bad. However there is a definite skew with female characters where their motivations and really what makes them a “character” is completely overridden by the fact that they’re a woman and someone’s trying to draw attention to that. A lot of writers need to realise that out of all the things that make characters interesting and compelling, gender is very low on that list and really only brings definition to the strong core you should have already created.
Of course I’m of the opinion that the Iron Man films were actually very good, so you might want to disregard everything I’ve said.
