Mmm… so do I.

This.
havent seen second series but pretty obvious that her feminism and kick ass-ness will fade, it was seen as almost a character flaw (a la taming of the shrew). Unless I’ve totally misinterpreted…
Hurm, well I think I agree with some of that, and disagree with some of that. But like you say, this post is about Britta’s character, so I’ll try to keep it to that.
Yeh, she’s definitely changed a bit from her original character. I think that’s an effect of this type of show, they start off one way, and slowly they change as they’re written to fit a space in the group. For example, Troy has become much more ‘stupid’, to fill the role of that type of character. With Britta I suppose she has become that sort of ‘buzzkill’ character who talks about political views that they don’t want to hear. Which I guess is pretty accurate of real life and makes for a good running gag, but I agree that her feminist views are completely undermined by that and the viewer might not take her seriously as a result. I can totally understand how disappointing it is to see a character and not want them to change, but inevitably they do as the writers had different intentions for them. I have mixed opinions about the season 1 finale, which I thought was pretty hilarious, playing on that TV romance trope. But then to make that joke they did have to compromise some of the characters writing, particularly Britta’s, who I’m sure even if she did secretly like Jeff wouldn’t have done what she did. (You’ll be pleased to know that they fix all that in an absolutely hilarious season 2 premier). And yeh I also agree about Jeff. I think he’s a hilarious and brilliant written character, but as a person he is completely awful and yes, absolutely sexist due to his ridiculous narcissism. I think sadly the problem there is people’s inability to separate the character from someone they’d like to share a pint with, and although I’m sure in this show that Jeff isn’t meant to be the Hero, I can certainly see how many, many people will still see him that way as there’s no grand justice for his character so that they can go “Oh! So he wasn’t a good guy!”. Hurm, well I don’t know how to solve this problem in the context of the show. I guess they could have Britta ‘win’ in more obvious ways in episodes to try and balance out the antithesis of Jeff. But you could be right about her being written from the perspective that her beliefs make her an outsider, not in a good way, but in a way that suggests that SHE is the one who has to change in order to become accepted. Which would be very sad.
Anyway, Season 2 is really great I feel. They’ve become a lot more brave as they change the mood, tone and style almost every episode. There’s some hilarious moments that I wanted to mention but I don’t want to ruin anything for you. I gave Dan and Hat a disk with the first half of season 2 on it, so track that down! The internet capping sucks :(
